Video equipment manufacturer Telestream, in Nevada City, earned a gold award from United Way of Nevada County for its continued support and top participation in the United Way campaign.

In the past five years, Telestream has raised nearly $50,000 for United Way through payroll pledging, special events and corporate gifts. In the past year, employees have pledged more than $17,000.

“Telestream is a true community partner. They continuously reach out a hand to the local community,” said United Way of Nevada County Executive Director Megan Timpany. She presented the gold award to Telestream President Dan Castles for his company's generous support.

Three other companies and government agencies received this distinguished award from United Way of Nevada County for their leadership in the organization's campaign to improve lives of local people by directing community resources to community needs. They are Grass Valley USA, TriContinent and Nevada County employees.

Silver and bronze awards also will be distributed to other local businesses for top participation in the United Way campaign.

Companies and government agencies in Nevada County are hosting events such as soup meals, Friday Jeans Day and used book sales to raise money for United Way. Money raised from events and payroll pledges go toward designated nonprofits or United Way's community impact fund.

Through the fund, United Way commits funds to maximize impact in the areas of education, income and health by working with 20 partner agencies, all of which are local health and human service nonprofits.

The Friendship Club of Nevada County is the newest nonprofit to join the family of United Way partners.

In 2012, United Way will be celebrating its 30th year in Nevada County.
