Unai Montes-Irueste serves as the Communications Director for the United Ways of California. After serving as a bilingual, public school teacher for five years, he went back to school for an MBA with a public policy focus.
Prior to joining the UWCA, Unai helped lead public affairs, communications, and social media for Service Employees International Union, an organized labor body comprised of over 2 million members nationwide. While working with ULTCW/Local 2015, Local 721, and the Committee of Interns and Residents, he advanced the Fight For $15, living wages, paid sick days, overtime benefits, universal healthcare, the expansion of the safety net, workers' rights, workplace protections, LGBTQIA rights, environmental justice, women's rights, racial justice, and the rights of immigrants—both longstanding community members, as well as new residents, refugees and asylum seekers.
Unai is a proud alum of Dartmouth College and Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management.
